Grama Jan’s Frosted Orange Sugar Cookies

When I was a child with my brothers, Matt & Chris and sister Laura – – mom would make these cookies and we would have such a great time decorating them and giving them to our friends and family. Since Schuyler was a baby we have made
them together with his friends- or just the 2 of us. We have shapes for every holiday! This is our first experience at our home in Belchertown – – what a GREAT kitchen for baking! (can you taste the M&M’s? Schuyler’s decoration of choice!)

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 Tbsp Orange Peel
3-1/2 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup milk

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat eggs and orange peel into mixture. Sift dry ingredients; add 1/2 dry ingredients to creamed mixture. Mix well. Add vanilla and milk and then remaining dry ingredients. Chill.

Preheat oven to 375º

Roll chilled dough out to 1/8 inch thick. Cut and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool. Frost

FROSTING

1/3 cup butter
2 cups confectioner’s sugar
1 TBSP cream
1 egg yolk
1 tsp vanilla

Mix frosting ingredients together and spread on cooled cookies. Decorate. (or take the lazy man’s way and buy Pillsbury Frosting in the can) :o)
